10 Ways to Help Reduce Fine Lines on Your Face and Neck

Your skin gets drier and flakier as you age, making it more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. The best moisturizer to use will contain hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

Hyaluronic acid helps keep skin moisturized. At the same time, vitamin C protects your skin from UV damage. You should moisturize twice a day, morning and night, to reap the benefits. 

This ensures that your skin is hydrated during the day and while you sleep at night. Most day creams are generally non-oily to be applied under makeup with ease. It will also contain active ingredients to defend your skin against UV rays. 

Night creams tend to be heavier in texture and have ingredients to reduce early signs of aging. It will feature ingredients that work to repair damage and regenerate any cells damaged during the day. 

2. Stay Hydrated

Our bodies depend on water to survive, right? But did you know drinking water can make you look and feel younger? 

Staying hydrated keeps your body refreshed and helps to maintain your skin's elasticity. People who drink plenty of water during the day are less likely to suffer from wrinkles and fine lines. 

For women, experts suggest drinking around 11.5 cups of water daily. For men, it's slightly more at around 15.5 cups per day. 

Here are some easy tips to help you drink more water

  • Carry a water bottle with you 
  • Choose water over sugary drinks 
  • Opt for water when dining out 
  • Add a wedge of lime or lemon to your water 

Water isn't the only option for staying hydrated. Many fruits and vegetables are high in water content at almost 90–100%. 

They include strawberries, watermelons, and spinach. Other beverages such as milk, juice, and tea are also high in water content. 

Limit your intake of sugary sodas and energy drinks. These drinks can have a dehydrating effect if you consume too much. 

3. Don't Smoke

Smoking can cause cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. But did you know it can damage your skin and cause wrinkles? 

Non-smoker skin will have a soft appearance and a soft texture. Smoker skin will have a greyish appearance with pronounced lines between the eyebrows and wrinkles around the mouth. 

That's because the toxins in cigarette smoke damage collagen and elastin. These are fibers that give your skin its suppleness and elasticity. Your wrinkles will be noticeably deeper when you smoke, giving you a much older appearance. 

When you stop smoking, collagen production can resume within months, and you may notice your skin returning to a healthy glow. However, the wrinkles you already have won't go away. The damage can't be reversed. 

The good news is that you may be able to prevent any more wrinkles from appearing. Better yet, your skin will recover its elasticity and will be noticeably smoother. After six months or more, your skin will regain its original vitality and glow.

4. Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen protects against sunburn and reduces your risk of skin cancer, but did you know it can also help reduce the signs of aging skin? 

That's right! Sun exposure is the most common cause of fine lines and wrinkly skin.

UV rays penetrate the skin and damage the elastin fibers that keep the skin firm. People with fair skin are more at risk of developing wrinkles than those with darker skin. 

While you can't go back in time and tell your younger self to slap on some sunscreen, you can prevent any further damage now. Here's how: 

  • Avoid sunbathing 
  • Always wear sunscreen 
  • Wear a hat with a wide brim
  • Avoid the sun when its rays are strongest – between 10 am to 3 pm

Of course, it's not always possible to hide away like a vampire during those hours, especially if you work outside. That's why wearing sunscreen is your best defense against wrinkles. 

Choose a sunscreen that identifies itself as "broad spectrum." It can protect your skin from the sun's UVA and UVB rays.

UVA rays can penetrate your skin and cause your skin cells to age faster. At the same time, UVB rays are associated with skin burning and skin cancer. 

5. Eat Vitamin-Rich Food

Your body needs vitamin C for collagen production. As you age, your collagen levels decrease, and your skin will lose its elasticity and form wrinkles. 

Because the body cannot make vitamin C on its own, it's essential to include plenty of vitamin-rich foods in your daily diet. You can also take vitamin C supplements daily to help fend off the signs of aging. 

Vitamin C is found in plenty of fruits and vegetables, including: 

  • Citrus fruits 
  • Berries
  • Potatoes
  • Tomates
  • Peppers 
  • Spinach 
  • Cantaloupe 
  • Brussel sprouts 

You should also include foods and drinks high in anti-inflammatory properties to protect against skin damage and improve skin elasticity. These include:

6. Relax Your Facial Muscles

7. Sleep on Your Back

You're not alone if you haven't heard about this wrinkle prevention technique. Some experts suggest that sleeping on your back is the best position for prolonging youthful skin. 

If you repeatedly sleep on your side or face down, it causes the skin to fold and crease. Eventually, this will become permanent. While it's challenging to change your sleeping position, it may help you in the long run. 

Here are some other helpful techniques to avoid getting sleep wrinkles: 

  • Avoid sleeping on your hands
  • Wear a sleep mask 
  • Use an elevated pillow
  • Try a firmer pillow
  • Swap out your pillowcase for silk or satin

Silk and satin pillowcases may help prevent wrinkles because your skin has less to grip onto. This means there is less chance of permanent fine lines from your sleeping position. 

Some people find sleeping on their back increases discomfort in their lower back. If this is the case for you, don't worry, there are plenty of other fine line prevention techniques for you to try. 

A good night's sleep is just as crucial in maintaining a healthy glow. 

8. Limit Your Sugar Intake

Not only should you limit sugary foods for the sake of your health, but you should also do it to reduce your chance of fine lines and wrinkles. 

The more sugar you eat, the more fine lines and wrinkles you develop. Unfortunately, it's true. Some of the most delicious foods are also causing you to age faster than you should.

A high-sugar diet not only damages collagen production but also affects what type of collagen you have. There are many different types of collagen, 16 to be exact. Type l, Type ll, and Type lll are the most common in your body. 

Type lll collagen is the strongest, while Type l is the weakest. A high-sugar diet can turn Type lll collagen into Type l, thereby reducing your skin's elasticity and hydration. 

But you don't have to cut out sugar completely. When you deprive yourself, you're more likely to consume excessive amounts in one sitting. 

Limit your sugar intake but continue to treat yourself now and then! 

9. Get Enough Sleep 

One of the easiest ways to reduce wrinkles is by getting enough beauty sleep! 

While you sleep, your body works to repair itself from the day's daily activities. That's because your skin makes new collagen when you sleep, which prevents wrinkles and sagging. The more collagen you produce, the less likely your face will wrinkle. 

Adults should get seven or more hours of sleep per night. However, that's easier said than done! 

If you're getting fewer than seven, it's likely affecting your appearance and can lead to twice as many fine lines. It also leaves your skin drier making fine lines more visible. 

Here are some helpful tips for a good night's sleep: 

  • Stick to a sleep schedule 
  • Don't go to bed hungry 
  • Limit daytime naps 
  • Reduce blue light exposure at night 
  • Don't consume caffeine after 3–4 pm
  • Don't drink alcohol 
  • Take a relaxing bath or shower
